Thom, René

Thom, René
(1923-2002)
   mathematician
Born in Montbéliard, René Thom studied at the École normale superieure and taught at the universities of Grenoble and Strasbourg before moving to the institut des Hautes études scientifiques (1961). Thom contributed to the field of algebraic topology, but he is best recognized as the author of the theory of cobordism (dealing with differentials) and studies on layered spaces and stratified mor-phisms (Stabilité structurelle et morphogenèse, 1973). He is known especially, however, for his catastrophe theory, which emphasizes the discontinuities of phenomena and focuses on the qualitative aspects that determine general form. Thom's theory had been applied to physical, social, and biological problems, as well as to linguistics. in 1958, he received the Field's Medal, the highest award in mathematics and, in 1976, was named to the Academy of Sciences.
